A poem by the Italian Renaissance writer
Ariosto, published 1532 as a sequel to
Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato 1441-94. The
poem describes the unrequited love of Orlando
for Angelica, set against the war between
Saracens (Arabs) and Christians during
Charlemagne's reign. It influenced
Shakespeare, Byron, and Milton, and is
considered to be the greatest poem of the
Italian Renaissance.
